Overview
Since 2017 Lightwell and the Juluwarlu Group Aboriginal Corporation have worked together to create an exhibition that celebrates and shares Yindjibarndi Culture with visitors and the community. We have developed a suite of interactive touchtables, education programs, videos and animations based around books and drawings from the local community.
Based in the town of Roebourne in Western Australia, the exhibition is located in the redeveloped Victoria Hotel.
Interactive map touchtables allow visitors to discover important cultural sites in the region and explore high-resolution images, videos and stories in Yindjibarndi and English. Landscapes and drone footage of Yindjibarndi landscapes feature in an accompanying atmospheric projection. Paintings of animals and plants by children from the local community are brought to life as animations on the touchtables. The paintings have also been adapted as creation stories narrated by Yindjibarndi Elders.
Visitors can use the family tree touchwall to browse a database of thousands of individuals from the Yindjibarndi community and search for family members by name and galharra (skin group).
